Chimney liners make new life for your damaged or unusable chimney

Advantage Air Duct Cleaning of Eugene, OR recently had the pleasure of restoring a customers dangerous unlined chimney back to a usable and very safe fireplace that she can enjoy any time and feel good about it with a new chimney liner.  This customer owns a beautiful home up the McKenzie River that was built in the 1800’s.  As you can imagine, the 1800’s weren’t times of builder codes and regulation.  1910 was the year that a terra cotta tile liner was code in all masonry chimneys built for heating a dwelling came in effect.  To this day we still come across many chimneys that were built in the 50’s and 60’s that don’t have a terra cotta tile liner.  The purpose of a terra cotta tile liner is to protect the home from heat transfer.  It only takes 12 hours to heat through a brick before the heat that fire produces can be transferred to whatever it is pressed up against.  Normally that would be the wood framing in a home.  The fear of heat transfer is a phenomenon called wood-pyrolosis.  Wood-pyrolosis is amazing phenomenon as over the years as a piece of wood is heated, its kindling point can be reduced to 200 degrees without flame!  That’s right, without flame!  That means that if you burn your chimney for years and heat has transferred through the brick 1000’s of times and heating the wood that’s pressed up against it, the wood-pyrolosis phenomenon can certainly take place and can

Should I Clean My Air Ducts?

Why should you have your furnace and air ducts cleaned? Do you have allergies? Did you have construction done in your home? Do you notice having to dust more frequently? Are you sneezing more frequently? Do you have pets? Did you m ove into a home previously occupied by another family? Have you ever had your ducts cleaned before? If your answer is yes to any of these questions you should have us clean your system!  If you think about it, if you moved into a home that has a forced air system and have not had your air ducts cleaned; you are breathing someone else’s dirt!  I think of it as sleeping in someone else’s bed sheets.  It gives you a very uneasy feeling to think about. The National Air Duct Cleaners Association recommends that your air ducts should be cleaned every 3-5 years.  Over time contaminants build up and can cause respiratory irritation and also cause your system to run 40% harder than it needs to. A dirty air duct system can also cause funny smells.  Dust and dirt carries moisture and damp or wet dirt can certainly create an unpleasant smell.  These smells can also be caused by pet dander that has also been ingested by the air duct system.  An important detail to remember is that whatever the system ingests, it will breathe it back out into your home.  Dirty air can be recirculated 5-7 times a day depending on how much you run your system.

Eugene Home Show

We enjoy helping people solve their problems when it comes to heating and air conditioning appliances.  When I’m in Eugene/Springfield and surrounding areas there are always quirky issues that homeowners have that I can take care of.  It could be a sticky damper or a weird noise.  I also have the ability to replace blower motors, install custom chimney caps, bid on installation of a new wood stove and stainless steel liner.  We can install filter racks and order special high efficiency filters for people with bad allergies.  Please feel free to ask, we are more than happy to help with anything you need assistance with. We ventured out to the home show this last weekend at the Lane County fair grounds.  Although we did not have a booth, it was great to see so many great services offered in our community.  There are so many different products and contractor services out there it’s astonishing how we can all stay busy.  I saw everything from something as simple as pest control and moss cleaning services to things that cost thousands and thousands of dollars like custom kitchens and counter tops.  It was also nice to see how many people were in the market for home improvement.  It is a great feeling knowing that the even in this rough economy, there are still people out there that have the means to make elaborate improvements to their home.  We will definitely be making an effort to getting Advantage Air Duct Cleaning into

Keeping Your Chimney in Good Shape

I’ve been very busy these past few weeks helping the people of Eugene/Springfield, OR and surrounding areas get ready for the wood burning season.  It’s nice to be able to help so many people with their safety during the burning season.  It’s very important that if you use your fireplace, wood stove or pellet stove for a main source of heat, it should be cleaned and checked for safety annually.  If you don’t use it for a main source of heat, it should be cleaned and checked every two cords (4 feet high by 4 feet wide by 8 feet long stack) of wood.   Expansion and contraction play a major role in changes that take place in your firebox and flue that you can’t see that can be a serious hazard to your safety.  Expansion and contraction cause metal and masonry to weaken over time. This can cause cracks to form which make it possible for creosote to wick through and set fire to the wood framing of your home in the event of a flue fire.  This is why it is so important to have a professional clean and check your wood burning appliance. Another major aspect of my work is inspecting masonry for structural integrity.  I have been to many customers homes recently that need some repair to the masonry chimney above the roofline.  If you go to my Facebook page you can see some pictures of chimneys that need some masonry repair.  www.facebook.com/advantageadc  Check back often
